2.1. Strengths

  • Residual support base in every constituency
  • Party organisation and members in every constituency
  • Public representatives still present in most constituencies
  • Great party tradition and history
  • Long list of achievements over decades

2.2. Weaknesses

  • Sustained huge reputational damage in crisis
  • Viewed by many as corrupt / self-serving
  • Party organisation weak / dormant many areas
  • Local organisations may lack local drivers / leaders
  • Low level of support in national media

2.3. Opportunities

  • Enthusiasm amongst membership for renewal
  • Impetus to renew party and restore greatness
  • Embrace social media & technology landscapes
  • Encourage new candidates into field locally
  • Get involved in ground level campaigns
  • Labour may suffer during coalition backlash
  • Recast recent narrative – claim credit for any recovery
  • New candidates may be attracted by seat vacancies
  • Out of government can concentrate on party

2.4. Threats

  • Loss of support in certain key demographics to other parties – Sinn Féin and Labour
  • Enemies of Fianna Fáil will try to keep us down
  • Struggle for relevance if left / right divide emerges
  • Continued association / blame if economy worsens
