Continued Capital Expenditure in Transport Critical for Kildare

Cllr James Lawless Kildare NorthI spoke recently at a Transport Policy Conference in Clane organised by Kildare North Fianna Fáil and chaired by Timmy Dooley TD. One of the key points I made was calling on the Government to restart capital funding for transport infrastructure projects. Commuters will have noticed that at train stations across Kildare North there are increased passenger volumes. For instance, Maynooth station was recently listed in the top 10 busiest stations in Ireland.

Investing in train line infrastructure and rolling stock is important now as the economy starts to recover and public transport needs to remain a viable choice for residents across Kildare North, so many of whom commute to Dublin for work and study. This is a policy area I’ve been vocal on for years. This Government, and future ones, must give a commitment to investing in transport infrastructure.

Safety First at Historic Well in Sallins

James Lawless Chapel Lane Sallins GAAIn conjunction with Sallins GAA, I’ve had some success making chapel lane safer and managed to keep intact some local history. The chapel on Chapel Lane in Sallins has long disappeared but one relic from a by-gone era has survived. Next to the gates of the GAA grounds is an historic holy well situated below street level.

After the matter was raised at the Sallins GAA AGM, in my role as member of the council’s Heritage Committee, I undertook to address it. I recently arranged for safety railings to be installed to prevent people falling in to the well, particularly younger children who frequent the GAA grounds. The GAA club were also keen to preserve this local piece of history.

Sallins & Naas Bike Lockers Installed

James Lawless bike lockersThere is welcome news for commuters as Irish Rail have introduced bike lockers at Sallins & Naas train station. After requests I made last year, the busy commuter station was chosen by Irish Rail for the pilot scheme. The innovative yet simple scheme allows cyclists to cheaply secure their bicycles in lockers during the day. I’ve noted many complaints over the years of bike thefts at the station. This was had discouraged commuters from cycling to work before taking the train.

NAMA Drainage Resolution for The Waterways, Sallins

James Lawless Waterways SallinsThere is good news for the Waterways development in Sallins. NAMA, who own most of the vacant units in the estate, have reached an agreement with an adjacent landowner to resolve the outstanding drainage issues in the estate. This was a necessary step to satisfy the original planning conditions so that the remaining units could be sold and occupied. If this resolution proceeds as planned, it will hopefully usher in a bright future for the Waterways and the wider Sallins community. I am highly engaged with KCC and the other parties on this and will keep you updated.

Additional Funding Approved for Sallins-Naas Greenway

canal_pic1Good news as additional funding for the Greenway Canal Project from Sallins to Naas has been announced by the NTA. This is in addition to funding that the Naas Municipal District Council have already pledged for the project. I have invited a joint delegation of the Naas Greenway Group and Sallins Community Council to appear before the council and discuss the next steps on this exciting project. I raised this at the council meeting last September and you can read some more background here.
