School Transport from Northwest Kildare to Edenderry to be Investigated by Minister

8-news-bebs9I can confirm that Minister John Halliagan has given a promise to investigate the situation of school transport from Johnstownbridge, Kilshanroe, and the wider area to Edenderry’s St Mary’s and Oakland schools.

Following the fiasco which has left many without school transport last September I have this week met the Minister to lobby on behalf of parents who had been left driving or making other arrangements to get their children to school in Edenderry. If at all possible, this must be avoided for the upcoming academic year.

Funding for Sallins Bypass and Osberstown Interchange, Pressure must Be Kept On

Sallns Rd roundaboutThis funding is very welcome news for Sallins village, Clane, Prosperous, and the wider areas which have had bottle neck traffic building up at morning and evening times. The bypass is exactly what these areas need and I am delighted to see the council receive funding for this project. Only as recently as this week have I contact Minister Ross to lobby for funding. It has been one of my main projects since being elected and am delighted to see this pressure pay off and funding secured for this part of the overall project.

I have been campaigning for this development, and the wider M7 Widening project, for nearly ten years now. Since being elected to the Dáil I have repeatedly raised funding matters regarding both projects in the chamber.

From figures previously obtained it is my understanding €110 million is needed to complete the entire project of the M7 Widening and the Sallins Bypass. As they both went out in the same tender I intend to keep further pressure on the Minister to fight for the remainder of the €100 million needed to see this project completed.

North West Kildare Residents Struggle for School Bus, Minister Halliagan has Broken Promise

I have spent the past five weeks lobbying the Minister of State John Halligan to get school bus places for constituents in Johnstownbridge, Kilshanroe, Kilmurray, Dunferith, Timahoe and other areas in North West Kildare. It is now the case there are a number of students who cannot get a school bus to Kilcock or Edenderry due to cuts imposed by the Minister’s Department.

My clinics in the area have been full with concerned parents and my offices in Maynooth and Naas have been receiving calls about this matter. Despite the Ministers promises school bus places have been cut back right across the country. In the Dáil the Minister stated that no child would lose their place on school buses pending the outcome of a review in his Department.

The Minister has broken another promise by the failure to set up a cross party committee that would meet at the end of July to try and help resolve outstanding problems with the school transport scheme.

If the Minister had taken necessary action in good time, parents would not have this stress right now. His Departments efforts to save money have now brought unnecessary burden for so many families in Kildare. Clearly this is not good enough. I am calling on the Minister to set up this cross party group immediately to resolve this problem for parent and students

Broadband Coverage Increased in North West Kildare

Map of new broadband coverage in North West Kildare

I am delighted to unveil the coverage map of areas which will receive fibre speed broadband where previously there has been slow or inconsistent broadband coverage. Working with Imagine, we have brought the service to the north west of the county following meetings with residents and hearing their concerns around the lack of coverage in the area.

As a member of the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Communications, Climate Change and Natural Resources, and someone who is passionate about improving our broadband services I am delighted to be able to let residents know of the service rollout which is live and taking applications now. A huge issue when I met with residents in the area was the lack of coverage in places like Newtown, Johnstownbridge, Carbury, Broadford, and Timahoe. All these areas will now have access to fibre speed broadband. As people can see from the coverage map there is now comprehensive coverage across north west Kildare.

It has been said time and again how important broadband is for the local community in terms of education and business. It is a credit to Imagine for working with me and appreciating the concern and demand from residents in the area.

Meeting with IFA President Joe Healy and Kildare North Farmers Roy Gallie & Brian Rushe

It was great to sit down with Irish Farmers Association (IFA) President Joe Healy and the Kildare delgation at their Oireachtas briefing recently. The Farmer Income Crisis briefing highlighted many serious issues affecting our small farmers across Kildare North.

It’s imperative we improve the supports available to small farmers in Kildare. I am looking forward to continue working with them to promote and support the good work the farming community do in our county.

If I can be of any assistance to farmers or their familys applying for grants etc. please dont hesitate to contact my office.
