Fine Gael Rules Out Reopening of Garda Stations in Kildare

garda numbers kildare james lawlessComments made by Minister for Justice Francis Fitzgerald are unacceptable after she has completely ruled out the reopening of rural Garda stations closed by Fine Gael and Labour over the last five years. The closure of rural Garda stations in Kildare, coupled with cutbacks to Garda resources, has coincided with a spike in rural crime in the county. This is something I’ve highlighted over the past 5 years on numerous occasions.

It’s astonishing to see the Justice Minister completely rule out any reopening of rural Garda stations closed by Fine Gael and Labour over the last five years. These station closures have had a significant negative impact on the operational capability of the Gardai. It has removed Gardai from many communities across Ireland and has made it easier for criminals to target homes and businesses in rural Ireland.

Rent Should Be A Factor In Central Bank Mortgage Deposit Rules

James Lawless NaasI support calls today from party colleague and finance spokesperson Michael McGrath that the Central Bank rules on mortgage lending, in place since February of last year, need to be reviewed to examine the impact they are having on the ability of young couples and individuals to purchase their first home. In particular, he is calling for the rules to be modified in order that an established track record of paying rent is taken as evidence of ability to service a mortgage.

A survey carried out by Daft.ie last September found that it was cheaper to buy rather than to rent in 43 out of 54 areas covered by the survey. This means that, in up to 80% of the country, individuals and couples would actually be financially better off on a monthly basis paying a mortgage than paying rent for an equivalent property. In Kildare the average rent for a 3 bed house is €933 whereas to buy would cost between approx. €676 & €846*.

Naas Roundabouts Sponsorship Scheme Welcomed

James Lawless NaasThe council has agreed to my proposals for a sponsorship scheme to landscape roundabouts within the Naas area. The motion brought forward in November at a meeting of Naas Municipal District was greeted positively by the council. This initiative will serve as a boost for the appearance of the town as well as providing advertising opportunities to local businesses. I am delighted that this has been accepted by the council. All roundabouts in the Naas area, even the minor ones, will now be open to accepting sponsorship in lieu of landscaping. It benefits both the council and local businesses while providing residents and motorists with a more attractive town.
